Conference Abstract: This study focuses on the impact of submicron yttrium oxide on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) and Laser Directed Energy Deposition (LDED) 316L Oxide Dispersion Strengthening (ODS) nanocomposites. The LPBF process utilized a combination of 316L SS + Y2O3 powder, while the LDED process utilized a combination of 316L SS +YTiO powder and 316L wire in-situ doping method. Microstructure characterization indicates an even distribution of Si-Mn-Y-O nanoparticles throughout the LPBF 316L matrix, while Y-Ti-O nanoparticles were present in the LPBF and LDED 316L ODS alloy. Additionally, a multi-scale model was employed to predict the particle size distribution based on the cooling rate in both processes. The predicted oxide size was found to be within the ±30% range of experimental results. The overall goal is to design, build, evaluate, and deploy large-scale ODS components for energy applications.
