Design for Inspection Wire-DED: How Inspection Modalities Affect Product Design

Conference Abstract: Inspection of AM products remains a technical barrier to broad application and implementation of AM products to many industries. This presentation will cover several aspects of this landscape, with a primary focus on commercial and DoD aerospace product detailing how designing product for inspection alleviates many technical challenges. We will also discuss how design for inspection enables users to employ existing, well established NDI modalities for product conformance evaluation. To do this, we will look at several use cases, how they may be employed, how initial product design influences the choice of NDI, and why design for inspection is the most important link in creating serial producible, repeatable, inspectable, and certifiable Wire-DED product.
